Covid-19-Update: In March 2020 the 17th edition of Crossing Europe Film Festival Linz had to be canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. For documentation purposes the program planned for 2020 is published HERE. With "Crossing Europe 2020 - EXTRACTS", Crossing Europe is presenting a multi-part alternative program from April to December 2020 with an online program and a series of physical events in the cinema.
The three feature films that will be shown as school screenings this year, were selected by the YAAAS! Young Programmers for the competition section YAAAS! Competition. The Young Programmers will be attending every screening, and will present the films, as well as lead a Q&A session with the attendant film guests. Particularly in this instance, direct communication with the filmmakers and dealing with the medium of film in and of itself is of great importance. School materials that were specifically written aim to aid the preparation and follow-up of the screenings.

Olka lives for one thing only: the search for her mother. Ever since she committed theft, and ran away from her orphanage multiple times, the seventeen year old girl is forced to live in a repressive reformatory school. She tries to keep to herself in order to flee from the bleak day-to-day and becoming a victim of mobbing by the others. Determined and left entirely to her own devices, she finds her calling in running, a talent shared by mother and daughter. Despite severe setbacks, she never loses sight of her goal – a sense of family and security.

Algerien während des Bürgerkriegs in den 1990ern. Harte Zeiten, vor allem für Frauen. Als „unmoralisch“ gilt quasi alles, was mit Freiheit zu tun hat – gebildet oder unverheiratet zu sein, die neue Kleiderordnung abzulehnen und vor allem der Kampf um Frauenrechte. Doch genau das tut Nedjma. Mit Mut, Furchtlosigkeit und starkem Willen kämpft die 18-jährige Mode-Studentin gegen die neuen Verbote der Radikalen an. Ihr Plan ist es, mit einer Fashionshow für Freiheit und Unabhängigkeit einzutreten. Doch der Weg dorthin ist steinig.

Nora ist 14 und auf der Suche nach sich selbst. In diesem langen, heißen Berliner Sommer hängt sie meistens mit ihrer großen Schwester ab, Jule, die jedoch nicht so wirklich als Vorbild taugt. Die Mutter der beiden ist meist abwesend, hat eigene Probleme. Nachdem Romy, die neue Mitschülerin Nora aus der Patsche hilft, wird ihr langsam bewusst, wie anziehend sie Mädchen findet, allen voran Romy. Am Ende des Sommers, weiß Nora, wer sie ist – einem Schmetterling gleich, verlässt sie den schützenden Kokon in Richtung Leben und Erwachsensein.
Für die junge Kreuzbergerin Nora gibt es viele erste Male in diesem flirrenden Hochsommer: Menstruieren, Kiffen, sexuelles Begehren entdecken. Und da ist auch noch Romy – eine behutsame Annäherung zweier junger Frauen.
