Golden Bag Window Display Contest 2021

Once again this year, the people of Linz, as well as festival guests from both in and outside the country can look forward to creative decorations in the display windows of the inner city in Linz that make for that special festival flair. All those who decorate their display windows from 20 May to 6 June with promotional material from CROSSING EUROPE are eligible for great prizes – in cooperation with Europack, OÖNachrichten and Linzer City Ring.


The renown German avant-garde director and all-round artist Ulrike Ottinger created a gem in the form of a gripping autobiographical documentary with her film PARIS CALLIGRAMMES, that takes a look at her younger self from the point of view of the elderly artist. A tour will be organized by CROSSING EUROPE, Österreichisches Filmmuseum and Diagonale. 

Austrian Premieres – at CROSSING EUROPE and Diagonale

Due to the ongoing state of emergency in the cultural sector, CROSSING EUROPE, the Diagonale (8-13 June) and the short film festival Vienna Shorts (27 May – 1 June) are collaborating intensively this year.

Christine Dollhofer transitions to Filmfonds Wien

Christine Dollhofer, who founded CROSSING EUROPE together with Wolfgang Steiniger in 2003 will relocate to Vienna in November 2021 and will head the Filmfonds Wien, the second largest Austrian film funding agency, and will therefore be handing over all agendas of CROSSING EUROPE after eighteen years of successful work. 

YAAAS! Close-Up

The discussion format YAAAS! Close-Up is a collaboration with the YOUKI and scheduled online for 4 June at 3pm. Two young filmmakers are invited to show their first videos works in comparison to current films, and to answer questions by young people.

Festival Trailer 2021: GRÜN IN

In Laurien Bachmann’s video work GRÜN IN, the media artist shows a seemingly untouched natural landscape in lush green tones complete with a waterfall. Across from that we see a digital traffic light. In red letters it counts down the seconds: Green in 3, 2, 1.

First Documentary Highlights

Once again, CROSSING EUROPE devotes itself particularly to contemporary sociopolitical auteur cinema from Europe. Today we would like to present four documentaries that deal with current political topics, reflect social and cultural contexts, and invite audiences to delve into topics of our more recent history and the current state of Europe.

Architecture and Society: TOGETHER!

For the twelfth time CROSSING EUROPE presents the program section Architecture and Society in cooperation with the afo architekturforum oberösterreich. This year’s program was curated by Lotte Schreiber and consists of four documentaries on the topic of community: TOGETHER! Communities, Collectives, Co-operations. The films raise questions about how communities act and represent themselves in a larger social practice.

Working Worlds: CHANGES

Re-education, structural change, new missions in life – under the title “Changes”, this year’s Working Wolds deals with changes in the working life of 2021: Both of a professional and private nature, forced or voluntary, planned or unplanned.

Cinema Next Europe Club 2021: Apply now!

The Cinema Next Europe Club is a four day practical module that takes place within the framework of CROSSING EUROPE between 1 and 4 June 2021, in which ten young film creatives from Austria can take part. 

YAAAS! Competition Films & School Screenings

The YAAAS! Competition is one of four competition sections and a module within the YAAAS! Youth Program at CROSSING EUROPE. Established in 2019, the goal of the program is a holistic offer for film education and to acquire media competency and DIY video productions skills. 

Tribute 2021: Ivan Ostrochovský (SK)

This year the CROSSING EUROPE tribute section is dedicated to the Slovakian director and producer Ivan Ostrochovský (*1972).
