Milch ins Feuer

Smell of Burnt Milk

Three generations of women on a farm in southern Germany in summertime: it’s a time to go swimming every day, get pregnant, think about the future – and for llama castrations, obviously. Justine Bauer's remarkable debut feature is a rural meditation on what it means to be a modern farmer, on womanhood and motherhood. The images have a hypnotic stillness about them, beautifully complemented by the deadpan delivery of the actors and their broad dialects. It feels like agricultural realism by way of Samuel Beckett, and it’s unapologetically, gloriously original. (Film Festival Cologne)
