Slovenian experimental film in focus
10.04.2025 // This year's European Panorama Special section offers a unique insight into Slovenian experimental film with two programs: For a long time, Slovenia had an untapped treasure trove of cinematic avant-garde - until the local film museum digitized 179 remarkable short films between 2013 and 2023. Most of these were made outside the state system during the socialist era. In their documentary ALPE-ADRIA UNDERGROUND!, Matevž Jerman and Jurij Meden offer an exciting overview with a cleverly edited compilation of original material and interviews with filmmakers and critics.
Curator (Kinoteka - Slovenian Cinematheque, among others) and filmmaker Matevž Jerman has also curated a program of nine experimental short films made in Slovenia over the past decade under the title FROM WHERE I STAND, I SEE THE FUTURE. The program opens a window onto a diverse, vital scene that reflects on the present with urgency and imagination, both on a highly personal and social level, often creating visions of a world unraveling.
