God Will Not Help

In ein Gebirgstal im heutigen Kroatien kommt um die Jahrhundertwende eine schwarz gekleidete Besucherin von weit her: die Chilenin Teresa. Sie trifft hier auf Milena, die allein den Hof hütet, während ihre Hirtenfamilie mit den Schafen oben in den Bergen weilt. Trotz Sprachbarriere schafft es Teresa, sich zu erklären: Sie ist die Frau des ausgewanderten Marko, Milenas Bruder – und Marko ist tot. In der brachialen Idylle des Berges entwickelt sich mit Fortdauer eine unheimliche, rätselhafte Spannung: Die Männer der Familie sind misstrauisch, Teresa stört die Ordnung, und bei Tag und vor allem bei Nacht scheinen bald übernatürliche Mächte am Werk. At the turn of the 20th century, Teresa, a woman from Chile, reaches an isolated herder family in the mountains of Croatia. She brings with her the news of the death of her husband, the family's emigree brother. Teresa only speaks Spanish, the family only knows Croatian. Her arrival unsettles the rigidly Catholic, patriarchal community. Lacking a common language, she makes herself understood through gestures and rituals. A close bond forms between Teresa and her sister-in-law Milena. Alas, envy and distrust cause the mood to shift, as Teresa becomes a screen for others' projections, representing both refuge and threat. (goEast Film Festival)
