Alles ist zugeschneit, Autos, Häuser, ganze Wohnblöcke. Langsam schaufeln sich die Menschen heraus. Das Winterende naht, das alltägliche Leben erwacht – aber radikal fragmentarisch erzählt: Bild für Bild, ein verblüffendes Tableau nach dem anderen, ergibt sich ein Mosaik der modernen menschlichen Zivilisation. Gewöhnliche Ereignisse wirken mit Martin Kollárs Blick surreal, fast absurd. Und das ist erst der Anfang, denn bald wird klar, dass wir uns im Frühjahr 2020 befinden … Gegen das, was da kommt, wird auch der überlebensgroße Heiland wenig ausrichten können, den zu Beginn ein gut gelaunter Mann fein säuberlich aus hartem Schnee geschnitzt hat. Filmed over the course of eight years in his homeland of Slovakia, renowned cinematographer Martin Kollar’s second feature rides the line between fiction and non-fiction to form a collective portrait of a contemporary reality that is in a constant state of flux, where industry and urbanization transmute traditional customs and nature itself. Kollar’s stylized cinematography captures the everyday actions performed by CHRONICLE’s subjects in largely static long takes, revealing a familiarity that is draped in absurdism. Their customs and quotidian habits, though peculiar, create an archive for the future. (Czech and Slovak Film Festival of Australia)
