In Litauens Hauptstadt Vilnius blickt man sorgenvoll auf den Krieg in der Ukraine. Ilona jedoch hat andere Probleme: Ihr dreißigster Geburtstag steht bevor, und damit die Frage im Raum, was sie im Leben erreicht hat. Äußere Beunruhigung und innerer Umbruch finden ihren Widerhall in der Sanierung des Plattenbaus, in dem sie soeben mit Freund Matas eine gemeinsame Wohnung bezogen hat. Ein erster Schritt in Richtung Familie, aber will Ilona das wirklich? Nach eigenem Drehbuch und mit viel Empathie setzt Urbonaitė eine Geschichte in Szene, in der die Pläne und Ideen der Menschen von der Wirklichkeit überprüft und verändert werden. The feature debut RENOVATION is contained within the deteriorating walls of a Soviet-era apartment in present-day Vilnius. 29-year-old Ilona appears to be entering a settled phase of life. She has moved in with her boyfriend Matas, and the scaffolding outside the building suggests a future that is being carefully repaired and structured. Yet the renovation is not solely architectural. As Ilona develops a tentative friendship with Oleg, a Ukrainian construction worker, and begins writing poetry – first impulsively, then obsessively – the film draws a parallel between the visible decay of the building and the emerging fractures in a life shaped by conventional social expectations.
