Der Mann mit dem Affengesicht kämpft sich noch einmal durch die kunstvoll-groteske Unterwelt, in der Norbert Pfaffenbichler die Frühzeit des Avantgardekinos brachial hochleben lässt. Als zwar abschließender Teil der 2551-Trilogie funktioniert THE END auch als alleinstehende Grenzerfahrung im Kinosaal, denn vor der Wucht dieser psychotropen filmischen Suppe der Urängste gibt es kein Entrinnen. Und doch, am Ende des wilden Ritts findet der gepeinigte Protagonist sogar einen Moment der Zärtlichkeit – bevor sich seine Wut gegen die Herrschenden in einem explosiven Finale entlädt. Traversing the uncanny valley between experimental art and pure underground trash, 2551’s fictional universe is one of decay, degradation and repression. Again, our hero is an unnamed and masked apeman, who traverses the nightmarish realms of a heavily militarised post-apocalyptic world in the search of a missing child. His quest drags him into the belly of the beast of a twisted society, marked by disturbing encounters with colourful and grotesque characters. (International Film Festival Rotterdam)
