Als frischgebackene Studentin neu in Madrid, bemüht sich Laura zunächst mit einer Dating-App um soziale Kontakte. Nach mehreren Zufällen sind jedoch David, der mit Zerebralparese lebt, und dessen Mutter Isabel die ersten Menschen, mit denen sie gerne Zeit verbringt. Isabel und David finden bald eine unerwartete Parallele, die sie verbindet, und sie, selbst auf der Suche nach sexuellen Erfahrungen, bietet an, ihm eben dabei zu assistieren. Das Frühlingserwachen bleibt jedoch nicht ungetrübt, in diesem Film voll präziser Einstellungen und sanft inszenierter Gefühlswelten. (Jakob Dibold)

18-year-old Laura has just moved to Madrid to study. She spends her days at university and her evenings in the city’s bustling streets. One night she meets David, who has cerebral palsy. The meeting with David opens new doors for Laura, and she takes on the role of his sexual assistant while exploring her own sexuality. THE RITE OF SPRING is a strong character portrait of a young woman’s encounter with adulthood and exploration of her sexuality, through both conversation and action. This drama is strengthened by strong performances as well as elegant, observational camerawork focused on Laura’s face, and the more intimate scenes are tastefully depicted.
