In dieser Abrechnung mit totalitären Strukturen wird selbst der Stalinismus endgültig der Lächerlichkeit ausgesetzt. Wenn dies nicht einen derart bitteren Beigeschmack hätte, könnte man es womöglich für komisch halten. Doch so ziehen vierzig Jahre Geschichte der CSSR an einem vorüber, und was bleibt, ist der Triumph eines Einzigen, ist der ideelle Sieg des Filmemachers Jan Svankmajer über das System.
In this castigation of totalitarian structures, Stalinism itself is exposed to ridicule once and for all. If there were not such a taste of bitterness to this, one might even find it funny. As it is, forty years of the history the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic pass before the viewer, and what remains is the triumph of a single person, the ideal victory of the filmmaker Jan Svankmajer over the system.
