This is England

Aufnahmen aus dem England der achtziger Jahre über Aerobic, Duran Duran, die königliche Hochzeit von Charles und Diana, Rubik Cubes, erzählen von Aufbruch, Naivität und Unschuld. Shane Meadows konterkariert diese Bilder mit Dokumaterial über Demonstrationen der rechtsradikalen National Front, Prügelszenen zwischen Bürgern und Polizei und dem Falklandkrieg. So tauchen wir ein in das England der Thatcher-Ära. Der junge Shaun, dessen Vater im Falklandkrieg getötet wurde, trifft auf Woody und gerät so mit einer Gang von Skinheads in Kontakt. Er findet Aufnahme in diesen Freundeskreis und mit neuem Outfit und Glatze fühlt er sich zum ersten Mal geborgen und akzeptiert. Die Gemeinschaft der Gruppe beginnt jedoch zu zerbrechen als Combo, ein altes Gangmitglied, aus dem Gefängnis zurückkehrt und Aggressionen sowie Rassismus schürt.

This is England is a look back at the early eighties, of British working-class life through the eyes of young Shaun and his new gang, and it deals with the bitterness of outside influences such as racism and xenophobia, mass unemployment and the fallout of the Falklands War; Thatcher’s Britain.
