Joy Division

Der Regisseur und Kameramann Grant Gee zeichnet in seinem Dokumentarfilm ein sehr dichtes Portrait der Band Joy Division. Der rasante Aufstieg und das abrupte Ende der Gruppe aus Manchester wird aus der Perspektive der verbliebenen Bandmitglieder (bekannt als New Order) und ihnen nahe stehender Personen dargestellt. Die Band, aus der Punkbewegung in Großbritannien entstanden, definierte sich rasch über einen eigenen, dunkel-industriellen Rocksound. Interviews mit Zeitzeugen, viele Live-Konzertmitschnitte und Bilder aus Manchester vervollständigen die Geschichte von Joy Division.

In 1980, aged 15, I bought a copy of Joy Division’s “Unknown Pleasures” album. It was the single most beautiful object I’d ever possessed and the first record I’d ever heard that didn’t just spit out sounds but seemed to create a whole new landscape. (Grant Gee)
