Somers Town
Thomas Turgoose, Hauptdarsteller in This is England (2006), treffen wir auch im jüngsten Film von BAFTA-Gewinner Shane Meadows wieder: als Tomo, der von zu Hause ausreißt, um sich in London alleine durchs Leben zu schlagen. Dort trifft er auf den polnischen Teenager Marek, mit dem er sich schnell anfreundet. Ohne Wissen des Vaters versteckt Marek Tomo in der kleinen Wohnung, von wo aus die beiden Jungen zu mehreren Abenteuern aufbrechen. Dabei treffen sie Martha, die französische Bedienung des nahe gelegenen Cafés und beginnen, um die Aufmerksamkeit der schönen Frau zu wetteifern.
Shot in stunnig black and white on location in the area of North London that the film takes is name from, Somers Town is Meadow‘s first film to be set outside the Midlands. Turgoose plays Tomo, a troubled young lad who‘s run away from London. There he meets Marek, a shy Polish teenager who shares a small flat with his labourer father in a rundown area. When Marek agrees to let Tomo stay with them, unbeknownst to his father, the pair form a strong bond as they work odd jobs for an eccentric neighbour, compete for the attention of Maria, a beautiful French waitress and try to avoid discovery by Marek’s father.

Shane Meadows, geboren 1972 in Uttoxeter/Staffordshire, England. Drehte viele zum Teil preisgekrönte Kurzfilme, bevor er mit Twentyfourseven (1997) auch international Aufsehen erregte. This is England (2006) wurde als bester britischer Film 2007 von der British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) ausgezeichnet.
