The Elusive Avengers ist die erfolgreiche sowjetische Antwort auf Die glorreichen Sieben (1960). Vier Jugendliche werden zu Helden im Bürgerkrieg. Gemeinsam mit seiner Schwester Ksanka schließt sich Danka, Sohn eines Agenten, der gefoltert und vor seinen Augen hingerichtet wurde, Valerka und Yashka an. Zusammen wollen sie sich an all jenen rächen, die so viel Leid in die Dörfer gebracht haben. Von da an sabotieren die vier, unsichtbar, aber mit Handschrift, die Banditen. Durch ihren starken Zusammenhalt sind sie so erfolgreich und effektiv, dass sogar die lokale Division der Roten Armee auf sie aufmerksam wird.

This film by Edmond Keosayan was released in the Soviet Union around the time of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. Its success was enormous. Not only because of the box office potential of the film itself, but also because young Soviet spectators remembered their fathers and grandfathers speak adoringly of the black and white silent Soviet hit Little Red Devils, of which The Elusive Avengers was a remake in Cinemascope. Tom, the black circus boy from the original film, was replaced by the picturesque gypsy Yashka, with the bright and clever Valerka as his friend, to show Soviet audiences that the intelligentsia now had permission to take a small part in the new Communist way of life.
