House with a Turret
Eva Neymann erzählt in DOM S BASHENKOY die Geschichte eines kleinen Jungen, der sich gemeinsam mit seiner Mutter auf die Reise zu seinem Großvater macht. Unterwegs erkrankt die Mutter an Typhus und stirbt schließlich in einem kleinen Provinzkrankenhaus. Von da an ist der Achtjährige auf sich allein gestellt. Sein Weg führt ihn durch verschneite Landschaften und von Armut und Zerstörung gezeichnete Dörfer, immer umgeben von der Allgegenwärtigkeit des Todes und ohne die Gewissheit, ob er sein Ziel je erreichen wird. Die Regisseurin illustriert gemeinsam mit ihrem Kameramann in beeindruckenden Bildern die beklemmende Atmosphäre in der ehemaligen Sowjetunion kurz vor dem Ende des zweiten Weltkriegs.
Based on Friedrich Gorenstein's same-titled autobiographical novel, Eva Neymann tells the story of the Second World War through the eyes of a 8-year-old boy who is travelling with his mother towards his grandfather. Their journey is stopped suddenly when the young woman dies of typhus in an unknown town just as poor and in ruins as any other on the way. However, the boy is determined to go on. Eva Neymann’s film is a visual journey into a country covered in snow and left poor by war. This is a place of beautiful, deserted landscapes and people overcome by both need and greed.
Director's Biography
EVA NEYMANN, born 1974 in Zaporozhye, Ukraine. She emigrated to Germany in 1993 and graduated in 2007 from the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin. Neymann directed several documentaries before debuting in features with the film AT THE RIVER, which premiered internationally at the Rotterdam International Film Festival 2007.
