Everybody's Cage
In der Neuen Musik kommt man um einen Namen nicht herum: John Cage. Der 1912 geborene Komponist war Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts unumstritten eine der zentralen Figuren der New Yorker Avantgarde. Als er gefragt wurde, wie er sich selbst in einem kurzen Statement beschreiben würde, entgegnete er mit süffisantem Unterton: „Get out of whatever cage you’ re in.“ Everybody’s Cage ist eine essayistisch-dokumentarische Annährung an die uns umgebenden Geräuschkulissen, ein imaginierter Dialog mit John Cage in vier Akten. Zusammen mit dem jungen Pianisten und Komponisten Francesco Tristano greift Trostels Arbeit die Cages Werk inhärenten sozialen und politischen Fragestellungen auf.
When John Cage, one of the most influential composers of New York’s 20th century avant-garde, was asked to briefly describe himself, he said humorously: “Get out of whatever cage you’re in.” Everybody’s Cage is an essayistic documentary on the musical approach to the soundscapes of our surroundings, an experiment in four movements, a fictitious conversation with John Cage. Through Francesco Tristano, a young pianist and composer, the film gets closer to the social and political questions inherent in Cages’ work.
Regie Biografie
SANDRA TROSTEL is a Hamburg-based independent director and producer. Having worked as an editor for almost 20 years, Trostel started her own documentary projects as a director in 2005. She has collaborated with such renowned acts as Pantha du Prince, Deichkind, and Phantom Ghost. Trostel’s first feature documentary, Utopia Ltd., premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2011.
