In nüchterner Form und mit konzentrierter Erzählqualität dringt Morinas Spiel filmdebüt in die bisweilen diffusen (Gefühls-)Welten eines Zehnjährigen ein. Im rauen kosovarischen Vorkriegsmilieu der 1990er-Jahre verdingen sich Nori und sein Vater Gezim als Zigarettenverkäufer. Gezim ist Noris einzige Bezugsperson. Was mit seiner Mutter passiert ist, weiß er nicht. Sein Vater will es ihm partout nicht sagen. Vielmehr plant Gezim, vor der Vergangenheit wegzulaufen, wogegen sich Nori mit aller Kraft zu wehren versucht. Es kommt zu einem verhängnisvollen Unfall, Nori landet im Krankenhaus. Als er entlassen wird, ist sein Vater fort. Fort, in Deutschland …

The film, intriguing for its sober expression and focused understanding of the topic, explores ten-year-old Nori’s inner and outer worlds. He encounters nothing but turmoil, and although he lives in a large patriarchal family, he compensates for his emotional distress by developing a strong fixation on his father. Gezim, however, is a weak-willed outsider who uses his son to earn a meager living selling cigarettes on the street. He never wants to talk about why his wife left him, and one day he himself decides to abandon the boy and his former life for a naïve vision of Germany as a change for the better. VISAR MORINA, born in 1979, is a scriptwriter and director from Priština, Kosovo. He graduated from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne in 2010. The drama Babai marks Morina’s feature film debut.
