Die lettische Filmemacherin lässt uns in den Mikrokosmos der sogenannten Garagen-Coops ihres Landes eintauchen – ein Ort, an dem das soziale Milieu des postindustriellen Proletariats mit persönlichen Räumen verschmilzt und der uns in eine längst vergangene Zeit führt. Es ist ein Ort, der von Nostalgie und der Sehnsucht nach Individualität geprägt ist. Frauen sind hier kaum anzutreffen, die Garage ist offensichtlich Männern vorbehalten. Hier dürfen sie noch Jungs sein – sie basteln, werken, betätigen sich als Künstler, Wissenschaftler, Erfinder oder als Privatunternehmer. (Lotte Schreiber)
The closed microcosm of garage coops, where the socio-economic environment has blended with personal space, provides a step back in time. Men are still boys, but their tinkering is both the trade and hobby of individual entrepreneurs, since self-exploitation as leisure time activity is a time capsule where neoliberalism has enclosed the postindustrial proletariat. Inventors, geniuses, crazy scientists, and men with golden hands – you will find them in garages.
Regie Biografie
The multimedia artist KATRĪNA NEIBURGA, born in 1978 in Riga, is one of the most noticeable figures in video art in Latvia. She studied at the Latvian Art Academy’s Department of Visual Communications and also spent a year at Stockholm’s Royal Institute of Art.
