Always Amber
Auf die Welt gekommen ist Amber als biologisches Mädchen, doch mit den damit verbundenen gesellschaftlichen Normen konnte sie spätestens als Jugendliche wenig anfangen. Sie fühlt sich weder dem einen noch dem anderen Geschlecht vollkommen zugehörig und versteht auch nicht, wieso darum so ein großes Hehl gemacht wird. Amber ist einfach Mann und Frau zugleich – oder eben nichts davon. Ein wichtiger Beitrag zur Debatte über Geschlechterneutralität, Rollenbilder und das Recht, so zu sein, wie wir wirklich sind. At the age of 17, Amber opted for the gender-neutral Swedish pronoun “hen” and began consulting a therapist specialising in gender identities. “If I lived with my friends on a deserted island where there are no norms, I might not be here,” says Amber. They are part of a new queer generation that confidently demands freedoms and opportunities not offered to them by society. Lia Hietala and Hannah Reinikainen’s long-term observational documentary spans three years, the film gives us a glimpse of what it might be like to live on Amber’s utopian island. (Berlinale)
Regie Biografie
Lia Hietala (*1993) is a student of fine art at the University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. For her first short film, IF I SAY NO, she received a scholarship from the North Norwegian Film Center. Hannah Reinikainen (*1992) studied journalism at Stockholm University as well as documentary filmmaking at Biskops Arnö Nordens Folkhögskola. ALWAYS AMBER is their first collaboration.
