Dealing with Death
Über mehrere Jahre hinweg begleitet der Filmemacher die holländische Bestattungsunternehmerin Anita, die im Vorfeld der Errichtung eines multikonfessionellen Bestattungszentrums eine Forschungsreise in die unzähligen Religionsgemeinschaften des Amsterdamer Vororts Bijlmeer antritt. Je intensiver sie sich mit den vielfältigen Begräbnisritualen der Communitys auseinander setzt, desto größer werden allerdings ihre Zweifel daran, ob ihre Vision den Bedürfnissen der Communitys gerecht werden kann. Der Film erhielt den Preis für den besten niederländischen Dokumentarfilm am Internationalen Dokumentarfilmfestival Amsterdam - IDFA 2020.
The many cultures in Bijlmer, a suburb in Amsterdam, all have their own rituals around bidding farewell to the dead. Funeral director Anita, a white Dutch woman, is tasked with finding out what the community would want in a new multicultural funeral home. Navigating between several worlds, she also has to deal with death in her own circle. But the more the initially confident Anita sees and learns, the more she begins to have her doubts. This largely observational account follows Anita’s uncertain mission over a period of more than five years. It combines her own experience with a larger picture full of cultural contrasts. (IDFA)
