Le grand voyage

Reda steht kurz vor der Aufnahmeprüfung für sein College in Südfrankreich, als ihn sein Vater zwingt, ihn im Auto nach Mekka zu chauffieren. Die beiden haben nichts gemeinsam, sie reden nur das Notwendigste. Der Vater verlangt Respekt für sich und die Bedeutung seiner Pilgerfahrt - Reda will die Reise auf seine eigene Weise erleben. Fast 5000 Kilometer lang fahren sie gemeinsam im Auto des Sohnes von Frankreich über Italien, Serbien, die Türkei, Syrien, Jordanien nach Saudi Arabien. Dabei beobachten sie sich behutsam gegenseitig und setzen sich der unausgesprochenen Frage aus, wie die Beziehung zwischen ihnen aussehen soll, wenn es keine Kommunikation gibt.

Reda's father forces him to drive him from the south of France to Mecca. For 3000 miles they share the confined space of a car. "Reda and his father belong to a culture where communication between father and son is difficult, if not impossible. The gulf between them (generation, culture, language) is even wider because of their status as 'exiles' in France. Their conversation is reduced to the strict minimum, but it is through their silences that Reda and his father communicate the most.
