On the pavements of Vilnius Bartas films timeless micro-dramas: seminarians marching along a white wall, horses in harnesses and refuse collection, dandies with blow-dry hairdos and walnut-faced old people. His black and white photography is constantly searching for the essence of what is depicted that goes beyond daily occurrences. “I have been admiring the city for a long time now. Sometimes it seems to be a creature of nature, as though some invisible force had united many people into a single large, living organism. Sometimes man seems to be drawn to this being against his will, in order to dissolve into its blood circulation. Nowhere else does one feel as lonely as in the city.” (S. Bartas)
