In the Cinema: Experience Europe!

The film progam 2021 is now published. For not quite a week, between 1 and 6 June, 123 current feature films and documentaries from 40 different countries are waiting to be discovered, including highlights from the festival season, innovative auteur cinema, and regional film productions. Together at the cinema for a journey all across Europe.

Must-Sees on 5 June

Three current by films by members of the competitions juries are on today’s program: Siegfried Ressel will present the world premiere of LANGSAMES DISSEITS. VIER MONOLOGE / SLOWLY HERE BELOW. FOUR MONOLOGUES together with Hannes Richter at 1:30PM. Crossing Europe award winner from 2016 Visar Morina is represent with his newest feature film EXIL / EXILE at 11:45 AM, and ÉDEN / EDEN by award winner 2011 Ágnes Kocsis will be shown at 1:45 PM.

The Juries 2021

We are happy to announce that a total of 14 jury members will be attending in-person in Linz. There they will decide on the winning films in the competition sections Competition Fiction, Competition Documentary, and Competition Local Artists. The entries in the competition section YAAAS! Competition will be judged by the YAAAS! Youth Jury.

Online Press Conference 2021 – 19 May, 10 am

On May 19, at 10 am, this year's press conference will be broadcast live from the Moviemento, online via live stream.

Opening Films 2021

Traditionally CROSSING EUROPE opens with more than one film every year – and will once again do so this year – that are representative for the variety of the contemporary European film landscape, and at the same time act as a cross section of the program of the year.

Politics in its Interplay with Media, Contemporary History, and Society

These three films shown in the festival program 2021 deal with the topic of politics in various striking ways.


The renown German avant-garde director and all-round artist Ulrike Ottinger created a gem in the form of a gripping autobiographical documentary with her film PARIS CALLIGRAMMES, that takes a look at her younger self from the point of view of the elderly artist. A tour will be organized by CROSSING EUROPE, Österreichisches Filmmuseum and Diagonale. 

Austrian Premieres – at CROSSING EUROPE and Diagonale

Due to the ongoing state of emergency in the cultural sector, CROSSING EUROPE, the Diagonale (8-13 June) and the short film festival Vienna Shorts (27 May – 1 June) are collaborating intensively this year.

Christine Dollhofer transitions to Filmfonds Wien

Christine Dollhofer, who founded CROSSING EUROPE together with Wolfgang Steiniger in 2003 will relocate to Vienna in November 2021 and will head the Filmfonds Wien, the second largest Austrian film funding agency, and will therefore be handing over all agendas of CROSSING EUROPE after eighteen years of successful work. 

YAAAS! Workshop Rally & Youth Jury

The DIY practical format YAAAS! Workshoprally will offer five practical workshops on such topics as camera, digital animation, props, and sound. Also the five members of this year’s YAAAS! Youth Jury, who will select the winner of the YAAAS! Competition have been nominated.

Golden Bag Window Display Contest 2021

Once again this year, the people of Linz, as well as festival guests from both in and outside the country can look forward to creative decorations in the display windows of the inner city in Linz that make for that special festival flair. All those who decorate their display windows from 20 May to 6 June with promotional material from CROSSING EUROPE are eligible for great prizes – in cooperation with Europack, OÖNachrichten and Linzer City Ring.

YAAAS! Close-Up

The discussion format YAAAS! Close-Up is a collaboration with the YOUKI and scheduled online for 4 June at 3pm. Two young filmmakers are invited to show their first videos works in comparison to current films, and to answer questions by young people.
